Mark Shelley is senior legal counsel at Marathon Petroleum Company LP in Houston, Texas, where he manages the intellectual property matters for the nation’s largest refining system. Drawing on over twenty years of broad technical and legal experience, Mark counsels Marathon both on the identification and protection of its intellectual property as well as a wide range of other IP issues. Drafting and negotiating intellectual property license agreements are a key part of his practice. Prior to joining Marathon, Mark gained experience in all aspects of intellectual property law at several international law firms and at an international oil and gas services company. Through these roles, he has advised clients in diverse markets, including oil and gas exploration, production and refining, agricultural chemicals, medical devices, alternative energy processes, and consumer goods, among others. Mark holds a Ph.D. and a B.Ch.E. from Auburn University and an M.S. from Texas A&M University, all in chemical engineering. He is also a licensed professional engineer in Texas. Mark has been involved in the Licensing Executives Society (U.S.A. and Canada) for a number of years, and particularly its education committee, where he served a three-year stint as SVP of Education.
